24 Mar 08 - Goole and the Trent
26th March 2008

I spent most of the Easter weekend in Basingstoke celebrating a family birthday. I’d hoped to get down to Southampton to see what was to be seen but firstly there were no cruise ships around to enhance the experience and secondly the weather turned out to be absolutely appalling (at least for Easter) so I passed on that. Easter Monday, however, produced a reasonable crop of ships on the local patch although there were vanishingly few new sightings. This didn’t worry me unduly though as I had been anxious to subject my new GPS gizmo to a slightly more challenging test than taking four photos in my back garden! In the end the GPS thingy performed fantastically, even managing to track the satellite accurately with the car in motion. If I can persuade to perform as well at sea (when it really matters) then I’ll be very happy indeed. Although, in the strictest sense there was only one new sighting, a feature of the day was the large number of ships (8 out of 20) for which I had only one previous sighting. The weather also cooperated by staying bright and sunny most of the time - although there were some very heavy snow showers around they all managed to miss me (or vice versa).
