As the title makes obvious, this site is about shipping. But, more specifically I see it as a record of the various trips that I make in pursuit of my main hobby of ship photography. For this reason tend to include more text than is present on most of the other shipping and ship photography sites that I have visited down the years (and probably more than is normal in the wider fotopic community as well). I see the site as something of a hybrid; somewhere between a Blog and a photography site.
What I don't record here are either technical details of the photographs or any data on the ships. As far as the former goes, I have never quite understood the obsession of amateur photographers with recording shutter speeds, f-stops etc given that they are relevant only at the time that the photograph was taken; they are of no value to anyone else unless they deliberately set out to recreate that precise image (and, even then, would be useful only if the lighting conditions were in all respects identical to those prevailing when the original image was taken). As for the latter, the details I have on the ships I have photographed were all obtained from freely and publicly accessible sources such as Equasis, and anything I have can therefore be readily obtained from these sources by anyone else. Having said that I will record certain details, such as builder and year of build if they are relevant to the context.
On the index page of each collection you will find some notes about the trip itself giving things like the reason for going, the weather etc. Under each photograph you will find more notes about the image itself and the vessel depicted. In most instances you will need to scroll down to read these notes - if you are using Internet Explorer, it will help if you press F11 in order to maximise the visible screen area. |
